Travelling Tips
Kenya is often said to be a cold country with a hot sun, the
blend of high altitude and tropical sun make for a unique and
variable climate. Temperature and climate vary from region
to region. The weather pattern is normally as follows: short
rains- March to May, long rains- July to November, dry season:
December to March which is normally the peak season. The following
are general travel tips for Kenya:
Visa and Health Regulations which should be checked at the
nearest tourist office or diplomatic missions, health certificates
are also required depending on country and should be checked
with relevant authorities. Yellow fever and cholera vaccination
are recommended. Anti-malaria education should be started prior
to arrival as malaria is endemic.
Arrival: Guests are picked from the airport and transferred
to hotel of choice.
Hotel check/checkout: Usually 10:00hours. Day rooms are usually
available upto 1800hours.
Language: English and Swahili are widely spoken but in rural
areas people often speak their native languages.
Clothing: Cotton linen dresses, light slacks and short sleeved
shirts are recommended. Bring warm sweaters as nights can be
chilly.
Currency: No restrictions on the import of the local currency.
Retain receipts to exchange local currency on departure. Well
known credit cards are accepted in Kenya and US dollar is widely
used.
Accommodation and means of Safari.
Lodges: Rooms are singles, doubles, triples and suites.
Lodge facilities include lunch/bars with log fires, dinning
rooms
and viewing platforms. There are also outdoor swimming pools.
Tented camps: Provide spacious twin beds with mosquito netting,
private bathrooms and verandas. There are also restaurants
and bar facilities.
Meals: On Safari meals are provided on a full board basis,
full English breakfast lunch is normally served the buffet
stay.
Banks: Banking hours 9am to 3pm Monday to Friday and 9am
to 12noon on Saturday.
Airport Tax: 20 US dollars.
Photography: Protect your cameras from dust using plastic
bags. A 200mm 300mm telephoto lens is recommended. It is
forbidden
to photograph statutory protected areas like state house
and state lodges etc.
Security: Avoid walking at night take taxis. Carry only a
small amount of cash and do not wear much jewellery in town.
